Manchester Bombing: What we know so far

By Conal Urquhart | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2017-05-23 17:07

? Manchester police said that 22 people have died and 59 people have been injured after an explosion in the foyer of the Manchester Arena concert hall, just after the American singer Ariana Grande finished her concert.

? Police believe the explosion, which went off at 10.30pm local time was caused by a suicide bomber.

? ISIS claimed responsibility, describing the bomber as a ‘soldier of the caliphate’, but there was no evidence they had any link, such as demonstrating prior knowledge of the attack or the attacker.

? The concert was full of teenagers, some of whom are among the dead.

? Two victims have been named as Georgina Callander,18 , and Saffie Rose Roussos, 8, whose mother and sister were also injured.

? Police say they know the identity of the bomber, but need to discover whether he is part of a network and where he acquired the materials to make the bomb.

? Police carried out raids around Manchester on Tuesday. A 23-year old man was arrested and a controlled explosion was carried out in the Fallowfield area of Manchester.

? It is the biggest terrorist attack in the UK since July 7, 2005, when four suicide bombers killed 52 people in London.

? The injured are being treated at eight hospitals around Manchester.
