2,000 cyclists to descend on Haikou for festival
The second Hainan Volcano Cycling Cultural Festival will kick of on Saturday in Haikou, Hainan province. More than 2,000 cyclists from all over the world will participate in the two-day event.
Airline celebrates direct link between UK and China
Hainan Airlines, Manchester Airport and the Birmingham branch of House of Fraser have teamed up to host a Chinese New Year celebration at the store on Wednesday. The airline launched direct flights to Beijing in June and the event will also recognize the new direct link between northwest England and China.
Sino-friendly British club marking Lunar New Year
The 48 Group Club will hold a dinner to celebrate Chinese New Year on Jan 23 at The Dorchester Hotel. The club is an independent network that aims to promote positive links with China. It grew out of "Icebreakers" clubs formed in the early 1950s that comprised Western business people seeking to trade with China. The club has more than 600 members, largely either British or Chinese.
Bank of England governor talking about world issues
Mark Carney, the governor of the Bank of England, will deliver a lecture titled Policy Issues Affecting the Bank of England on Monday. The talk, hosted by the LSE's Department of Economics and Centre for Macroeconomics, will be followed by a response from Amartya Sen, professor of economics at Harvard University and the 1998 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics. The talk is expected to touch on many things, including the influence of the Chinese renminbi on sterling.
