Brazilian vice president prepares for takeover from Rousseff

(Xinhua) Updated: 2016-05-03 14:56

RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazilian Vice President Michel Temer is meeting with leaders from various sectors to prepare himself for a possible takeover from President Dilma Rousseff, who is facing impeachment.

Temer on Monday met former Central Bank President Henrique Meirelles to mull economic policy of his possible administration, Agencia Brasil news agency reported.

Former Civil Aviation Minister Eliseu Padilha said the meeting between Temer and Meirelles aimed at finding out what might be the direction of an eventual Temer administration.

"If the Senate confirms the suspension (of Rousseff's office), there will be no time to think afterwards," Padilha said.

Temer has been meeting with several leaderships in recent weeks, in preparation for the aftermath of a possible suspension of Rousseff's role as president.

Rousseff is going through an impeachment process and her case is being analyzed by a Senate commission.

Should the Senate decide to begin an impeachment trial, Rousseff will have to step aside for 180 days for the trial to proceed, with the vice president taking over as acting president.
