Mavs get some help at guard

By Associated Press (China Daily) Updated: 2014-07-26 09:27

The Dallas Mavericks have signed former All-Star point guard Jameer Nelson as a free agent.

Terms of the deal announced on Thursday weren't released, but it is reportedly a one-year contract for the team's salary cap exception of $2.7 million with a player option for another year at roughly the same amount.

Nelson spent his first 10 seasons with Orlando after the Magic acquired his rights from Denver, which took him with the 20th overall pick in 2004. The 32-year-old has career averages of 12.6 points and 5.4 assists.

Orlando waived its career leader in assists on June 30.

Nelson was an All-Star in 2009, when he averaged 16.7 points and shot 45 percent from 3-point range. He joins a crowded list at point guard alongside Devin Harris and Raymond Felton.

Meanwhile, the Orlando Magic will have all three of their draft picks in training camp following the signing of Devyn Marble.

Magic general manager Rob Hennigan announced the signing of the 56th pick on Thursday, but terms were not disclosed.

Marble joins Magic first-round selections Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton, who have already signed contracts.

Orlando picked up the extra pick on draft night, along with Evan Fournier, by trading veteran Arron Afflalo to Denver.

Allen set for Cavs

Ray Allen is reportedly leaning toward returning for his 19th season in the NBA to continue as a teammate of LeBron James with the Cavaliers.

In two seasons together with the Miami Heat, Allen and James formed a close bond. After the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Heat for the NBA title, the two players vacationed together with their families.

Cleveland can find room under the salary cap depending on how the Cavaliers' pursuit of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love pans out.
