MELBOURNE, Australia - Chinese golfer Liang Wenchong arrived at Royal Melbourne on Tuesday for the World Cup with a lighter wallet after making a big donation to the Philippines typhoon relief effort.
Liang won the Manila Masters on Sunday in a one-hole playoff with Thailand's Prom Meesawat and donated half of his $135,000 first-place prize money - $62,500 - to aid typhoon victims.
Liang says "I was really affected by what I saw of the damage and victims suffering from the aftermath of the typhoon ... I decided to donate 50 percent of my winnings to do my part and support the relief efforts."
He will team with Wu Ashun to represent China, one of 25 teams and 10 individuals in the 60-man field for the World Cup beginning Thursday.
