Kendo club in NW Chinese city

Wang Weiwei leads a kendo exercise at his club in Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi province, June 18, 2013. Wang established the only kendo club in the province in 2009 and holds three classes a week. Kendo, meaning "way of the sword," or fencing, is a modern Japanese martial art, which descended from traditional swordsmanship and uses bamboo swords and protective armor. The exercise emphasizes etiquette and demands repetition of movements, and requires equipment costing at least 1,000 yuan ($163). So far it has not become very popular in Xi'an, Wang said.
