Comment on "Education reform aimed at benefiting migrants" (China Daily, March 8)

Children of migrant workers are no different from those of other people living in cities. So they have the right to receive the education that other urban children do.

The government has concentrated on the growth of East and South China and not done enough for the rest of the country. Rural residents deserve the same treatment as urban dwellers, especially when it comes to children's education.

It's high time the authorities reformed the education system to help children in need.

A rather complicated problem

As an urban resident with many migrant friends, my feelings about the issue are really complicated.

I know and understand the difficulties migrant workers face and would love to help them. But populations in cities have kept growing and space and resources in urban areas are limited.

Perhaps the best thing for the government to do would be to improve the education system in underdeveloped regions, and use every measure possible to develop these areas and prevent the exodus from rural to urban areas.

The other problem that the government has to deal with is the widening regional gap. I hope the government finds solutions to these and other problems and improves the lives and livelihoods of rural as well as urban residents.
