Updated: 2015-09-22

A fruit and vegetable festival kicks off with a grand opening in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on Sept 19, local media reports.

The festival, sponsored by the region’s fruit and vegetable association, will last until Sept 25 with activities such as a trade fair, quiz games, competitions in quality and packaging design, and a symposium on planting technologies.

Agricultural enterprises from all over the region have set up booths to display their farm produce and specialties, including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchinis and eggplants in Baoquan Marketplace, a venue for the festival.

The festival will build the reputations of local farm produce and develop agriculture, especially vegetables, as well as contribute to the government’s “vegetable basket”, a project to enrich food supplies by increasing the production of foodstuffs, according to the organizers.

A distribution center for local vegetables will be opened by the association and a logistics park in Hohhot, local authorities say.

Farmers in Inner Mongolia have been increasingly enthusiastic in planting vegetables, and the region has seen a rapid vegetable growth in recent years.
