W C Special 12: Spain going home
Who would have believed that after just two games the trophy holders would be going home? Two defeats, 7 goals conceded and only 1 goal scored. Spain's defeat by Chile means no points and no chance even if a win in the last game v Australia - that is a dead rubber, though Australia, after two narrow defeats, have something to prove.
How many of Spain's travelling fans would have booked flights home for tomorrow? None unless needing to go back for work! So that is the dilemma. Most will stay for the final game and hope for a better performance to cheer. Do they have a 2nd team to support now for the remaining games? It is surely the end of coach Del Bosque's reign.
Yet it is good to see trophies shared around, after Spain won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championships. Football once again proves that no-one is invincible. There was a great result for Croatia, winning 4-0 over Cameroon. The Lions also go home but Croatia v Mexico, as I predicted, decides who progresses to round of 16. Croatia surely deserve to. We know that the Netherlands will be there, along with Chile, so it is slowly taking shape. We will know a lot more after England v Uruguay coming up! Fingers crossed for my fellow countrymen!
Come on England!
