On a winter's night in December 1978, 18 farmers in Xiaogang village, Fengyang County, reached a contract. At the time, they didn't expect that their action could herald a reform that would change the fate of hundreds of millions of Chinese farmers.
China's reform has been accompanied by pain at every step, and every minute of China's advance has been beset by stormy weather. In 1988, inflation began to take hold of the Chinese economy, fueled by repeated construction and overheating. At the time, great changes were also taking place on the international stage.
The protracted campaign of violence and destruction waged by anti-government rioters is making life increasingly difficult for the people of Hong Kong. More and more are coming forward to share their frustrations and tell stories of their hardship. And they have a shared goal: a safe and peaceful Hong Kong.
Grenville Cross, Hong Kong's former director of public prosecutions, described the anti-mask law as "an important step in the right direction" in deterring people from indulging in wanton criminality on the city's streets.
Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai, former president of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, said that the city has been in the throes of violence for months and is in dire need of an anti-mask law.
