Remains of Chinese Korean War soldiers return

(Xinhua) Updated: 2015-03-20 20:42

SHENYANG - The remains of 68 Chinese soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War were returned to China on Friday morning from the Republic of Korea.

Two Chinese fighter jets escorted a plane carrying the coffins of the soldiers. They landed at Taoxian International Airport in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, at around 11:25 am.

At 12:22 pm, three buses carried the coffins away from the airport. The remains will be buried in a "martyrs' park" in Shenyang, with a burial ceremony due to be held there on Saturday morning.

The Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) fought with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's army in the Korean War against the South Korean army and US-led UN forces. Tens of thousands of CPV soldiers died on the Korean Peninsula during the war, which ended in an armistice in 1953.
