Strike ends at two Dongguan companies

Production at two strike-hit companies in Dongguan, Guangdong province, resumed on Sept 11 after senior executives from the two Taiwan-funded firms promised to cut their own bonuses, according to the city government.

The strike began on Sept 9 when about 16,000 workers from Dongguan Masstop Liquid Crystal Display Co Ltd and Wintek (China) Technology Ltd stopped work after their employers didn't give mooncake coupons to the workers for Mid-Autumn Festival, and the workers' festival bonus was cut to 100 yuan ($16) from the previous 600 yuan.

The strikers blocked roads outside their factories, snarling traffic.

Police and government officials were immediately sent to the scenes to help maintain social order and mediate the strikes, the city said.

The two strike-hit companies are subsidiaries of a Taiwanese Apple Inc supplier in Dongguan, a Pearl River Delta city and a major production base of Guangdong.

Wintek, a Taiwan-listed company, began operating in Dongguan in September 1995. The company now produces liquid crystal display front boards for Apple.

Covering an area of more than 80,000 square meters in the city's Sangyuan Industrial Zone, Wintek has about 20,000 employees in Dongguan.
