CHIANG RAI, Thailand - An unidentified corpse was found in the Mekong River near the site where two cargo ships were hijacked last week, police said Tuesday.

The male body with short hair was found floating in the Mekong River in Chiang Saen district, Thailand's northern Chiang Rai province Tuesday afternoon, about 200 meters away from the river bank.

Shi Minghui, deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Office of China's Yunnan province, where some of the victims were from, said he believed it might be the 12th body of the Chinese sailors who were killed during the ship attack last week.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin confirmed on Monday that 11 Chinese were killed and two remained missing after their cargo ships were hijacked and attacked in the Mekong River in Chiang Saen district.

The two cargo ships, Hua Ping and Yu Xing 8, were hijacked and attacked by a group of armed men who escaped after the ships were intercepted by the Thai police. The Thai authorities believe that the group might be linked to a drug trafficking gang which is normally active in the Golden Triangle area.
