The World's Ugliest Dog Contest aims to honor dogs that have overcome illness or injuries. VCG

Beauty in imperfection

On June 21, an eight-year-old Pekingese named Wild Thang was crowned the winner of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest, earning a $5,000 prize and a trip to New York City.

The annual contest, traditionally held in June in California, US, might seem controversial at first glance. However, its purpose is to honor dogs that have overcome physical challenges from illness or other causes, while also advocating for their adoption.

"The annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest is not about making fun of 'ugly' dogs, but having fun with some wonderful characters and showing the world that these dogs are indeed beautiful!" the official website of the contest emphasizes.

Wild Thang, the 2024 champion, had participated in the competition five times before finally winning. Stricken by distemper at just 10 weeks old, he survived but was left with lasting effects: stunted teeth growth, a tongue hanging out, and a muscular disease affecting one leg.

"Many of the contestant dogs have been rescued from shelters and puppy mills, to find loving homes in the hands of those willing to adopt," wrote the website. "This world-renowned event celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique."
